OU- 42 TEMP- 3
The Sooners looked pretty good against the Owls today, there was a couple mistakes but all in all it was a good win. It could have been a potential trap game, but the guys were ready to take care of business, and they did just that.
Key Takeaways
- The run game was amazing
228 yards and 4 touchdowns on the ground is AMAZING, it is exactly what we needed to see. Tory Blaylock was great, and Mateer had that huge run. If the run game can be this good, our offense will be unstoppable.
- John Mateer for Heisman
Mateer’s stats honestly are not good enough to win Heisman, but if you watch the games it is so obvious that he he one of the most talented players in the country, and without him OU would not be nearly as good. He should have either 1 or 0 interceptions at this point, but he doesn’t care about his personal stats, he just wants to win football games. The stats will come later in the season, and he will be the main reason that Oklahoma is very successful this year. That’s exactly what a Heisman needs to do.
- Oklahoma has the best defense in the country
Some of y’all might think this is crazy, but over the past 3 games the Sooners defense have only allowed not off of turnovers. It will be shown as the season progresses, but this is the best defense in the nation.
- Blaylock RB1, Ott RB4?
Tory Blaylock had the best game of his career, getting 14 carries for 100 yards and 2 TDs. He is clearly RB1. Jaydn Ott however, still hasn’t done anything special. At this point I think he should be RB4, behind Blaylock, Barnes, and Robinson. Until he can prove he can do something, Sooner fans shouldn’t hold out hope.
- WR rotation
We actually used a receiving rotation today, which I’m very happy about. At least 6 receivers got action, and Kearney especially impressed me. Sategna finally had his breakout game, getting 7 catches for 97 yards. Keontez Lewis took a nasty hit (should have been targeting) that resulted in the interception, we have to hope he’s alright.
Best Players
- RB Tory Blaylock
Blaylock was elite today, finally getting the Sooners a 100 yard rusher. He will be huge in this offense going forward.
- WR Isaiah Sategna
We’ve been waiting for his breakout game, and we finally got it. Sategna was getting touches all over the field, resulting in 97 yards for him. Most importantly, no fumbles in the punt return!
- TE Jaran Kanak
Kanak is just an elite pass catcher tight end. Mateer scrambling, then hitting Kanak last second is unstoppable and such an electric play. I am so glad he made the position switch. Oh, and he threw a 2 point conversion! What can’t this man do?
- S Reggie Powers
Powers was great tonight, 4 tackles with a sack and good coverage. He’s still behind Bowen, RSJ, and Daniels, but he is a great member of this defense.
- LB Sammy Omosigho
Omosigho was not only great in the run game, but also the pass game today. He had 3 pass deflections to go with 3 tackles.
- DB Kendal Dolby
Dolby was very good in his first game back, 4 tackles and a TFL. I am so happy he is back on this defense.
Positives
- Avoided the trap game
This was the perfect trap game, but we took care of business. We dominated this game start to finish, which honestly shows a lot against a solid Temple team, on the road with an early kick.
- The run game looks great
The run game might be back, and we were missing key members of our offensive line. We didn’t even need Mateer to get a ton of carries either, or backs were very nice today.
- 104 yards allowed
Only allowing 104 yards is absolutely insane. Holding them under 100 would have been legendary, but we’ll take this for sure.
Negatives
- R Mason Thomas suspended
Thanks to a bogus targeting call, R Mason Thomas will have to miss the first half of the Auburn game next week. That hurts, but we definitely have guys who can replace him.
- Michael Hawkins Jr needs to improve
I get it was his first game of the year, but if Hawkins is going to be the starter next year he needs to improve. He can’t just run right away, he has to be able to hit receivers from the pocket.
- Another interception
Mateer threw another interception, it wasn’t his fault but it looks bad on his stat sheet. His TD-pick ratio isn’t great right now, but hey if you're complaining about that, your team must be pretty darn good.
