There’s a lot to talk about from week 4 of the college football season, and although it’s a couple days later, better late than never.
Important results
- Oklahoma- 24 Auburn- 17
While it was an ugly game, the Sooners got a big win and have a legitimate case to being the number 1 team in the country. Auburn fans are complaining about the refs, but when you get sacked 10 times you can’t expect to win.
- Indiana- 63 Illinois- 10
Absolutely nobody expected this. A top 10 team losing by 50?? No way. Indiana is even better than last year, they are a top 5 team in my opinion and Fernando Mendoza is a legit Heisman candidate. Illinois meanwhile, might be in trouble.
- Texas Tech- 34 Utah- 10
Texas Tech was very impressive in SLC, and they showed that they should be the favorites in the Big 12. People were starting to suspect that Utah was a bit overrated, and it looks like we were right.
- Tulsa- 19 Oklahoma State- 12
Mike Gundy was fired. That's a crazy statement, especially if you just look back a couple seasons. Losing to an in-state rival that’s supposed to be far worse than you is the tipping point. Gundy had a great era in Stillwater, but all good things have to come to an end.
- Memphis- 32 Arkansas- 31
Memphis winning this game puts them right near the top of G6 teams battling for that 12th playoff spot. They had an incredible 18 point comeback, sealed by the clutch 1st down run by freshman QB Arrington Maiden to beat an SEC team, this win will go a long way for the Tigers.
Upset Alert
This includes almost upsets, and doesn’t include games previously mentioned
- Miami- 26 Florida- 7
The final score of this game doesn’t look to close, but this was a good game for 3 quarters. The Hurricanes were able to pull away in the 4th however.
- Syracuse- 34 Clemson- 21
This is extremely painful for Clemson. All but eliminates them from the playoffs, and they were 16 point favorites going into this game. The win comes at a price for the Orange though, as QB Steve Angeli tore his achilles and will miss the remainder of the season.
Best Games
This does not include previously mentioned games
- Michigan- 30 Nebraska- 27
This was a very entertaining game, that included a 50 yard hail marry for a touchdown. The Wolverines get a very nice road victory, and the Cornhuskers wish they could have got this, but no need to panic.
- Missouri- 29 South Carolina- 20
This one could have gone either way until late in the 4th quarter, it hurts if you’re a SC fan, having NEGATIVE rushing yards is very concerning. On the flip side, Mizzou fans are PUMPED
- UNLV- 41 Miami (OH)- 38
The Rebels needed this win badly to stay alive for the CFP, and they got in in a very tight one. Jaiden Thomas was once again great, and Anthony Colandrea was solid.
- North Texas- 45 Army- 38
An overtime game from 2 good AAC teams is a wonderful thing. North Texas puts themselves squarely in the conference title race, which therefore adds them to the CFP race.
Best Players
- IU QB Fernando Mendoza (21/23 267 yards 5 TDS)
This is an absolutely insane stat line vs a top 10 team. Mendoza is certainly in the Heisman conversation now, and may even be leading.
- UConn RB Cam Edwards (24 rushes 194 yards 2 TDs)
Edwards was electric vs Ball State, without him the Huskies do not get that win.
- TCU WR Eric McAlister (8 catches 254 yards 3 TDs)
This are numbers I would get in CFB26, absolutely insane, not to mention it was a big rivalry game.
- Oklahoma DE R Mason Thomas (4 tackles 2 sacks)
He was suspended for the first half, but boy did he make some noise in the 2nd. He had 2 sacks on his former QB, including the game winning safety.
- Texas Tech QB Will Hammond (13/16 169 yards 2 TDs)
With starting QB Behren Morton going down with an injury, Hammond stepped up big and got the huge dub for the Red Raiders.
